Many employees still aren't taking vacation, and the reason why may surprise you.

But new data shows a significant portion of workers never took a break at all — although the percentage of those who did take a vacation in the past year is rising compared to recent years, offering a silver lining as employers seek to combat rising burnout.

• While cost is the most-cited reason for not taking a vacation, about 31% of workers said they felt self-imposed pressure to stay on top of work, while others cited a heavy workload, not receiving any paid time off as a benefit, or not having enough co-workers to handle the load while they were gone.

, about 57% of Americans took a vacation in the last year — while 43% did not, tracking with the Eagle Hill Consulting survey. But that is dramatically up from 2021, when just 44% of Americans took a vacation. 2022 found the highest percentage of Americans having taken a vacation since the survey was first conducted.

, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA."Instead of banking those PTO days, Americans are viewing their vacation time as a much-needed getaway to support their mental health."55% of employed Americans have a work chat app installed on their phone and 52% have push notifications turned on so they never miss a chat. About 29% feel the need to reply immediately to messages outside of hours.
