A number of commercial properties at the former naval base may soon be available for long term lease or investment. The city of Alameda is working to determine which option would be best for the base.

The city has engaged a consultant to perform financial analysis of its options at Alameda Point, Director of Base Reuse Lisa Maxwell told me. An initial report will be available later this fall, Maxwell said, adding even then there will be “more chapters to come” in the city’s deliberation. She is working to bring the matter before City Council on an informational basis by the end of the year, but noted that timeline is an ambitious one.

The city could also determine it would be best to act on a case-by-case basis as it comes to the leasing and selling of buildings, Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft told me in an interview Sept. 2. She thinks the time is right for a broader discussion on the matter. “We have also seen so many economic cycles and changes that we’ve gotten a sense of the interest in our property,” Ashcraft said. “What is really exciting for me, as a mayor, is that we can now be more selective, because there’s so much interest. It’s no longer just a matter of — oh, I’ve got to lease these buildings for revenue.
