Also, what did you want – the Queen to notify you when her time had come? You lot usually love tradition and protocol.
Sure, there is an itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny economic reason to avoid public holidays. It’s so tiny that the entire drag on the economy of September 22 will be approximately 0.4 per cent in the September quarter only. Blink and you’ll miss it. Senior economist at KPMG Sarah Hunter says the UK’s Office of National Statistics explored what happened when the government bunged in a couple of unexpected public holidays: two for various jubilees and one for the wedding of William and Catherine.
Hunter says three sectors benefited: hospitality, retail and leisure. Construction, manufacturing and office-based work dragged the result down. But in Australia, we know how to party. My prediction is that our capacity for commemoration is epic. Just as we spend a lot of money on Australia Day, we will also indulge on September 22, our national day of mourning.
JennaPrice Personally, I find the Grand Final holiday weird, despite my being an avid Pies fan. It seems a bit like Easter Monday – a sort of depressive wasteland. That will be compounded this year by the day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth. Appreciate others have different views.
JennaPrice Though really this sentiment only works for full-time workers, who are a minority of the population. For everyone else, public hols are a hassle.
JennaPrice It’s exhausting. And the holiday has tied business in knots - Australian Tories can hardly object even though there will be a cost to business.
JennaPrice Jenna will have a permanent job with smh and will get paid . 3 of our casual staff will loose their one day pay .Our business which is struggling to pay the rent and repayments will loose one full day income . May be we should stop working altogether and party or mourn everyday
JennaPrice There are heaps of people who will have to overwork to reorganise whatever was originally planned for this day. Like all educators who had a class scheduled. Few modern jobs are such that a worker can take unplanned one day leave without any consequences to their workload.
JennaPrice Should we still have public holidays at Xmas & Easter now we r no longer a majority Christian country? Just asking
JennaPrice I agree that we love to party, but I need to say that a lot of schools have their year 12 graduations, formals and everything else booked for Thursday, and would now be scrambling to rearrange. At the end of a crazy term, this is a very hamfisted spanner to throw in the works.
JennaPrice How about becoming an independent country and having a holiday to celebrate that? “Republic Day”?
JennaPrice Why work when we can be on holidays all the time 🤣
