After a civil grand jury accused the 49ers of wielding undue influence in Santa Clara, the team called it a 'kangaroo court'The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday blasted a highly-critical report by the county's civil grand jury that accused the team of withholding payments and financial information from the city of Santa Clara and having an undue influence over its city government.
The grand jury didn't interview three of the five Santa Clara City Council members who were criticized in the report, Chandhok said. The body"prohibited" one councilmember from speaking to a lawyer and"pressured" another to cast"certain votes," he said. The 49ers spokesman did not identify the specific councilmembers or offer more details on the circumstances of those alleged actions.
After the grand jury circulated a preliminary version of its report, Chandhok on Sunday sent a 16-pageto Britney Huelbig, who serves as the body's deputy manager for Santa Clara County. In that letter, he addressed several of the points in the grand jury report, arguing that the body in numerous ways fundamentally misunderstood the city's management contract with the team. He also charged that revenue from non-NFL events was severely impacted by the city's decision to set a 10 p.m.
