American, 29, tries to regain form from when she was No. 3 in world

Sloane Stephens served up an ace to finish off a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Jil Teichmann on Tuesday to advance to the round of 16 of the WTA San Diego Open.Stephens, who is ranked No. 53 in the world after reaching as a high as No. 3 in 2018, cruised through the first set against Teichmann, a left-hander who was a late fill-in after Veronika Kudermetova dropped out of the tournament, but had to work hard to finish off a tightly contested second set.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek made the long trip to San Diego after playing in Ostrava, Czech Republic, where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova in Sunday’s Agel Open final. Prior to this week, she had never been to San Diego and said the site along with the timing of the tournament convinced her to make the long journey despite playing so much tennis in Europe in recent weeks.
