But there have been casualties. We can see quite plainly that the most deeply suffering stakeholders are the 1.6 million students who foot an increasing chunk of our universities’ budgets. How do we know this? Two years of campus shutdowns and online-only delivery have had a profound impact on those QILT results. Learner engagement data, which investigates students’ sense of belonging and their interactions with peers, collapsed in 2020 to 44 per cent, and recovered only to 49 per cent in 2021.That means half of all students – 800,000 individuals – do not currently have a strong affinity for, or sense of belonging to, their university.

The structure and reward mechanisms of the traditional academic career path over-reward research excellence and undervalue teaching ability, while students now expect their courses to be delivered in hybrid modes. They want the best of both face-to-face and digital delivery.
