By Mark Burdick – Contributing writerSince the first fire district was formed in Arizona in 1918, firefighters have proudly provided service to the citizens who live in, around or pass through the rural areas of our state — areas not covered by cities or towns. And unlike other municipalities, fire districts do not receive funding from highway user funds, transaction privilege tax/sales tax , vehicle license taxes or income tax.
