More state and local governments are requiring salary details in job listings — but there's another reason for companies to get off the fence.

A number of pay transparency laws are soon taking effect — and others are in the works — but regardless of the law, new data shows workers are still clamoring for more details about pay in job postings.

About 20 states already forbid companies from asking about a candidate's salary history in their own interview processes, while others require companies to disclose salary information during the interview process. Experts say to expect more legislation in states and localities across the country in the upcoming months and years.

The state of New York is poised to enact a pay transparency law that will require companies to post prospective salary ranges in job listings, with the legislation awaiting the governor's signature. In December,. The new requirement is scheduled to take effect Nov. 1, 2022. Salemi said as more pay transparency laws roll out across the country, it will be interesting to see if employers start voluntarily sharing ranges in their postings even when not required to.

On the flip side, about 22% believe disclosing salary in job postings could lead to tensions between colleagues who are not paid the same amounts, and 18% say it could bring more pay discrimination lawsuits against employers.
