Michael L. Gallagher, the co-founding shareholder and chairman emeritus of prominent Phoenix law firm Gallagher & Kennedy, has died.
Kennedy, who was chairman of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee in 2005 and launched the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation,Gallagher had a baseball scholarship to attend Arizona State University, where he received his bachelor's degree in history in 1966. He went on to play for the Kansas City Athletics until sustaining a major arm injury, then briefly scouted for the New York Mets until he came back to Arizona to earn his JD from ASU in 1970.
When Gallagher and Kennedy opened its doors, the two attorneys' sports connections led to several former athletes wanting to join the firm, including former Stanford baseball star Bob Boatman, now a G&K shareholder. In an article published in Attorney at Law Magazine in 2020, Gallagher said he thought like-minded athletes had an edge they could bring to legal work.
Gallagher gave back to the Valley community in numerous ways, and served on multiple corporate boards, including most recently on the boards of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. and its subsidiary, Arizona Public Service Co., until he retired in 2020. He also was a long-serving board member and shareholder of Nebraska-based trucking and logistics firm Werner Enterprises Inc. until 2021.Kathy Munro, lead director with the board of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. and Arizona Public Service Co.
