— “not the grocery store” — makes its millions doing the ongoing maintenance, repairs, and renovations for some of the continent’s best-known retailers. The COVID-related supply chain disruptions have, shall we say, been a challenge for her privately owned outfit.

She is no blue blood with a venerable surname who went to the right schools, who speaks in measured tones and makes her money in au courant industries like tech, consulting and financial services. Rennehan also had the confidence that comes from growing up amidst a loving, encouraging family whose support did not waver when she came out as a gay woman at age 18, and left town that year “with just a dirty hockey bag” to work night shifts for local contractors for free while learning the builder’s trade.

“But,” she told me, “the years that followed were some of the best I’ve ever had” and she has been in the U.S. market ever since.
