Versatile Padres pitcher Nick Martinez must decide whether to opt out of his contract by Thursday afternoon

have been talking about how to keep the right-hander on the team, both with a potentially restructured contract and with some assurances he will be a starting pitcher in 2023.

“He filled a valuable role for us this year,” Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller said. “The conversations with him have been getting a sense of what he wants to do but also the need of our ballclub. Starting is for us something we really want to explore with him. It’s something he wants to do, but we also know throughout the year, depending what happens … he has the ability to do some things.

Preller said Pomeranz “feels like the last month or two he’s getting himself in a different spot where hopefully he’s ready for the start of spring training.” Profar had a career-high 658 plate appearance and posted a .723 OPS, 19 points higher than his career average entering the ‘22 season.
