AskABoss: 'I told my team I was going to CA to see if I wanted to move there. I worked there for a month, loved it, and put a deposit on an apartment. No problem! Until I returned and my boss told me I actually can't.' Read AskAManager's advice:

For eight years, I have been fully remote. I am an outstanding worker, even winning Employee of the Year last year.

I think what’s going on is what they told you is going on: They looked into it and realized that letting an employee work from another state isn’t as easy as simply saying yes. In fact, as more and more companies went remote over the course of the pandemic, my inbox filled up with letters from people who wanted to do exactly that … and then, later, from people whothey had already relocated, that their companies wouldn’t permit it. So, while frustrating, it’s better you found out now.

To be clear, you wouldn’t see differences only with California; every state has its own set of laws that could differ from the ones governing your work now.

AskAManager Well yeah. WFH doesn’t mean work from anywhere. Employers need to have tax IDs in states where remote employees work. If they don’t already have a tax ID in that state, chances are they won’t allow a relocation just because you WFH. They have every right to have policies re: this

AskAManager I had the same thing in the U.K. I was told I am not allowed to take my work computer out of the country.
