One current employee said the overnight firings seemed to target many people in a large internal Slack group at Twitter called Social Watercooler who had either alluded to criticism of Musk or did so outright. The group has for years been a place where Twitter employees were openly critical of management or company decisions, alongside casual chatter, and a place where people had voiced frustration with Musk since he first invested in the company early this year.
One person fired apparently for their activity on the watercooler channel is a senior lawyer at Twitter who on Thursday messaged the entire group of about 2,000 people in the thread, according to copies of the message seen by Insider and previously reported by The Verge.
