Cindy Chavez: 'San Jose faces numerous challenges in the months and years ahead, requiring that we all work collaboratively with the entire City Council to reach meaningful and equitable solutions.'

Nov 16, 2022, 5:07pm PST

In a statement emailed to the Business Journal, Mahan thanked Chavez for her concession and said he hoped to work with her in coming years to improve the city. The businessman-turned-politician also thanked the people who volunteered for his campaign and both his and Chavez's voters, noting that more votes were cast this year than in any prior San Jose mayoral contest.

Earlier in the day, Chavez called Mahan, who is in the middle of his first term on the City Council, and wished him luck, she said in her own statement. The division between the two played out in their endorsements. Current Mayor Sam Liccardo and two of his predecessors — Tom McEnery and Chuck Reed — backed Mahan. On the other side, many current City Council members backed Chavez, who's currently a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors."Mayor Mahan will be a collaborative, dynamic, and thoughtful leader, who will ensure that our government works just as hard as the families we serve," Liccardo said in the statement.
