Mala Tejwani did not begin her career at Google and now DataStax in a traditional way. She won an international dance competition at age 15, then went on to perform with Cirque du Soleil. And yet lessons learned from those experiences, she says, have served her as a tech industry leader.

Then, at age 15, Tejwani decided to participate in an international Indian dance competition called Boogie Woogie. It changed her life. The best dancer from each country got to compete for the grand prize. Tejwani won the U.S. spot, then went to London for the finals and won the whole thing.

While at DataStax, Tejwani has had the opportunity to be a mentor to employees and a partner with the leadership team to build the company. She enjoys pushing herself by constantly taking on new challenges. She has worked with recruiting, inside sales, pricing, data operations, and other departments, learning all along the way.

Based on her own experience, Tejwani encourages other people not to follow a traditional, specific path. “Accept challenges that you can learn from. As noise gets created around you, focus on the end result and play your game. The further you get in a career the more noise gets created around being a woman in tech and so on. I shrug and say, ‘Why don’t we just look at my work product?’ Let your results and your impact do the talking.
