A Texas Judge ruled that Alex Jones should pay the $45.2 million in punitive damages that a jury awarded two Sandy Hook parents, in spite of a state cap that would have limited that amount.

Alex Jones has lost a bid to water down the nearly $50 million damages award handed down by a jury earlier this year over the Infowars host’s false claims about the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Texas Judge Maya Guerra Gamble on Tuesday ruled that Jones should pay the $45.2 million in punitive damages that a jury awarded Sandy Hook parents Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis in August, in spite of a state cap that would have limited that amount. The jury also ruled that Jones should pay $4.

But Judge Gamble ruled that she would enter a judgment for the full amount. “There’s no question to me that this is a rare instance, I hope it remains a rare instance, where a defendant intentionally inflicted emotional damage in a manner so unusual that the victims had no other recourse,” Judge Gamble said. She added that the amount should be high enough so it “isn’t affordable” to intentionally inflict this type of emotional damage again.

Alex Jones loses bid to slash $50 million Sandy Hook defamation verdictConspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Tuesday failed in his bid to slash a nearly $50 million defamation verdict against him over his false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting was a hoax. Judge Maya Guerra Gamble rejected arguments by a lawyer for Jones and the parent company of his Infowars website that a Texas state law capping certain types of damages meant that the August verdict in favor of two parents of a child slain at Sandy Hook should be cut by more than $40 million. Jones claimed for years that the 2012 killing of 20 students and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, was staged with actors as part of a government plot to seize Americans’ guns. Imagine supporting this blatant assault on freedom of speech. Disgusting. InfoWanker
