Technological solutions and investing in people have boosted transport and logistics businesses during the pandemic years.

With the end-of-the-year season fast approaching, Australians are being told to get their shopping done fast if they want their purchases delivered before Christmas by retailers and freight services.

Consumers want flexibility around when they receive delivery, says Steve Zammit, Interparcel’s Australia and New Zealand managing director. “We’re always talking to our courier partners about the importance of offering the end consumer choice because if you don’t have the option, you could end up with a lost sale.

“We can save businesses up to 70 per cent off courier rates as well as reducing handling and fulfillment times and we offer our shipping solutions for free, without extra fees or subscriptions,” Zammit says. JD Transport founder Joe Joseph got to know the company’s business from the ground up by driving a truck.

Based out of Brisbane’s markets, the company provides a cold chain solution for fresh produce producers and major retailers right across south-east Queensland. “We even do cosmetic maintenance on a regular basis, so if there’s a scratch on a van, it won’t be long before that scratch is picked up and repaired because it’s all part of taking pride in what we do,” Joseph says. For Joseph, owning the fleet and employing every driver and person in the company means everyone in the business exudes a certain pride in their work and performance. Unlike many other logistics firms, he doesn’t use sub-contractors driving their own rigs.

According to co-founder James Morell, Muval began as a conversation between him and fellow founder Mahdi Chardi back in 2016 as they discussed how to optimise backloading - that is, filling a truck on its return journey - after a removalist had moved a family and their belongings interstate for example.

“Not just anyone can join although anyone can apply before we go through a verification and qualification process where we check out the company to ensure they’re up to the standards we advocate for in terms of giving great service to customers,” Morrell says. “What we’re doing is unique in the space and we’re driving more convenience to the customer and helping them get everything they need for their move in one seamless experience in one location,” Morrell says.Another Fast Starter shaking up an industry is automotive subscription service Loopit.

According to Skentzos, the company was already talking to dealers about people buying online and Loopit presented them with a new revenue stream for new and used cars.
