Obituary: After aviation companies passed on his ideas, engineer Frank Robinson, who died at 92, started a manufacturer of small helicopters from his living room, and sometimes test flew them himself

Frank Robinson couldn’t convince the aviation industry to change its approach to helicopters, so he changed the business by making them himself.

Mr. Robinson started Robinson Helicopter Co. in Torrance, Calif., nearly 50 years ago on a hunch there was an untapped market for helicopters for civilian uses, such as cattle herding, sightseeing trips and business travel.
