Many Americans unable to buy a home right now are renovating their rentals instead.
Resigned to stay in place until the housing market improves and unwilling to live with dull décor, renters are swapping out fixtures, landscaping terraces and ordering custom furnishings. Online furniture retailer Wayfair Inc. said bookings for easily reversible add-on services like installing new doorknobs and drawer pulls have tripled since last year.
I'd pay to make a bland rented property a more comfortable and homely place to live. Comfort is worth more than money to me.
Also millennials don't want the problems of up keeping a home

I saw someone put over $20k into renovations 10 years ago, then was out when the landlord decided to move in.

You know rent costs money, right? Rent had one of the highest realizations of inflation. Not sure it makes sense to stay renting in your current place versus downsizing or finding a roommate.
