For the first six months of 2022, the Business Journal counted 6,502 layoffs. Layoffs continued through the summer and early fall, but something happened in November. What had been a steady flow of job losses became a deluge, with companies large and small saying they needed to cut costs and were eliminating jobs to do so.

What’s not yet known is how many of those lost jobs will impact local employees. Meta Platforms Inc., for example, has said it will shed 11,000 jobs globally with at least 2,300 of those being from the Bay Area. But Cisco Systems Inc, which has marked 4,100 positions for elimination, hasn’t broken out what offices will be hit.
