The Faceoff: Walmart is a globe-striding behemoth of a company but Canadian Tire shares have a better price to earnings ratio

There might be more to Canadian Tire than tires, but does that make it a good place to do your holiday shopping?“Their product mix just isn’t what you think of when you’re looking for holiday gifts. They’re not really strong in toys or apparel, which are the categories people usually look at for gifts,” said Hutcheson, managing partner at retail consultancy J.C. Williams Group.

Its sometimes fractious relationship with its franchise owners also means that not every store is always on board with plans from head office.Another issue for Canadian Tire — like many nondiscount retailers — is that customers are trading down to cheaper products across the board as the economy slumps. That’s going to eat into profits, said Edward Jones analyst Brian Yarbrough in a recent research note.

Some of that trend toward lower-priced items already showed up in the third quarter. The company announced profits in the quarter dropped to $225 million, from $279.5 million in the same quarter a year ago.“Household spend is still robust. … What we are seeing is a mix shift in that spend,” said Hicks. As a company with a market cap of roughly $413 billion , Walmart isn’t usually referred to as the little guy.

Hold on that info— they are hosting a Peterson event. Expect a downturn.

Investors accept a lower P/E ratio where they expect more growth.

I ❤️ Canadian Tire!

Better meaning lower? You think that’s better? It’s cheaper.

Because of CTC's cleverness, those 1/2 off sales at CTC that U see, well if U were 2 go to Walmart U would find that exact same product 4 the same price as the half off price, only thing is, that's Walmart's regular price, & those large yellow black price cards aren't sale prices

CTC has higher margin product than walmart not to mention t of stores in towns too small for a walmart. Add in their store brands and the margin they collect on them and it's not shocking in the slightest

I’ve had bad customer experiences in the past at Crappy Tire, so I won’t shop there.
