R&D for what? Manufacturing that would require it and Engineers qualified to do it do not exist in any practical sense in America.
Not that the country could fall behind but is falling behind. Look at any tech industry a large percentage of the engineers are here on work visas. Why, because the US is not producing enough engineers, scientists, doctors etc. Many in our nation fear science and being educated.

It might be that Americans now fear innovation for job security reasons so that’s no longer a national priority.
But we lead in being able to blow up sh*t..
Well of course we will fall behind. That is what happens when you cut taxes, increase the deficit and fail to invest in R & D. A review of R&D for the last half of 20th shows huge wins from federal R&D. Surely the WSJ knows this already&that other countries will fill the vacuum.

We’ll just burn coal and let the rest of the world take the lead while we watch reality TV, then elect reality TV “stars” to destroy what’s left of our country as we build walls and cower in our homes afraid of the world.
The Federal government should spend almost nothing on R&D. It’s why the private sector exists.
Because Govt is taking ever more out of the Free Mkt & Individual Liberty economy. Cut Govt spending to not let the United States fall behind
R&D is down only because China will take the new invention and make it and sell it at a price so that the inventor cant even recoup the investment it took to create it.

No really, what you really mean is fall further behind right? Coz we all know American is in the high teens low 20s as rank on just about every scale.
