The owners of Canyon Market have sold their popular San Francisco grocery store to a local family-run institution that will take over later this month.
Canyon Market's owners, Janet and Richard Tarlov, have passed the torch to Gus’s Community Market owners Dimitri, Bobby, and Georgia Vardakastanis, who will take over on Dec. 21. When the transition is official, the Canyon Market name and signage are expected to continue. "Preserving the great legacy that the Tarlov family built with Canyon Market and offering a full-service market to the Glen Park neighborhood is an honor and a privilege for us,” Dimitri told SFGATE via email. “We recognize and respect that the market has become a fixture of the neighborhood so keeping the name feels natural. It truly feels like a win-win for everyone."

Eventually, Gus’s Community Market logos and goods will appear throughout the store, but Richard explained that Canyon Market shelves will continue to be stocked with its own familiar products to help make the transition “seamless for customers.” Additionally, the 90 crew members who are employed at Canyon Market are anticipated to stay on board.
