TAKE A LOOK | SA's new Antarctic team sets off for a year-long mission today.

The SA Agulhas II heads to Antarctica today with South Africa's new-year team, and a support team and various scientists on board.

The year team consists of a doctor, two diesel mechanics, one electrical engineer, a mechanical engineer, communications engineer, a senior meteorological technician, and two physicists who study space weather. They are well-equipped and well-stocked, and for the duration of their stay at SANAE IV they have only themselves to rely on. Besides their day jobs, they also have to cook for the team, and clean and maintain the base, which is run like a small municipality with its own sewerage farm, electricity supply and water works. , about 4,280km from Cape Town, can be quite toasty and homely , stepping out the front door can be a little challenging, especially in winter.
