I was impressed they were stocking BTS albums recently but at £25 I can buy them direct from Korea myself cheaper even with shipping and very often freebies thrown in. It’s always sad to see companies struggling though

How much would it cost

Such a shame, hope they manage to survive, love going in and picking up vinyls for my collection.

I wonder who were the accountants for HMV that last signed off on their accounts?

With Vinyl sales on the up and the popuarity of comic book films and merch i thought HMV would survive

The day record companies put music into the supermarkets it was devalued and here we are today... HMV

I can't say I'm surprised, they couldn't teach the dog to use an iPod.

I’m honestly surprised they’re still in business everytime I see one.

Birmingham store was mobbed today such a shame and the prices were cheaper than the non tax paying she'd operation. No independent record shops anymore all it will leave is the online operations

Not a surprise. Having worked there for 4 years, I can say the people at the top have always made poor decisions and do treat their staff badly.

And no doubt KPMG will earn record fees.

It’s only a matter of time as the demographic who is download savvy moves through. Real shame but at least we have had a vinyl resurgence of sorts - long may that continue...wishing good luck to all at hmv hmvadministration

Again 😲

😢

It’s been years since I bought a CD and I don’t know anyone that has bought one recently. This was inevitable. They didn’t innovate when they needed to. They’re the Blockbuster of the music world.

chunkymark Another one bites the dust.

As much as it's sad to see a big name going, it just shows how ruthless the market is. If you fail to move on with technology and innovation, then you get left behind in the graveyard of zombie firms and lost brands. I feel for those whose jobs are at risk, best of luck to them.

As has been the case for a while in the US it's the tech corporations that are the winners with storefront retail. Amazon and Apple are the best examples. Groceries and convenience stores can work well but the UK needs to repurpose 50% of its retail space to balance actual demand

dannyrampling So sad

Inevitable really. The internet and technology have done this. The last music high street retailer. Rival records, Replay, Virgin, all gone. And now this....end of an era. Can we please go back in time

No local store and found their online selection to be very limited. Most times was easier to just go to amazon and get everything in one transaction. Nostalgia doesn't give selection or pay bills. Online only and they may of survived.

Amazed how many are pretty much saying 'good, who cares anyway?' have no compassion for the 2000+ people who could be seeing in 2019 jobless. I'd rather get something from a store than mess around with emails and postage if I get a faulty item, a 5 minute trip to HMV is easier

dannyrampling Not surprised there USP disappeared years ago,

Sad news

While it is a shame to see a big business and high street staple like this go it is hardly a shock. You would not get funding for this business model on dragons den if you pitched for it now!

Sad.

Hardly surprising - popped in the other day and everything far too expensive comparednot only to online, but to other highstreet stores. Don't move with the times, get left behind.

I am so surprised because I thought hmvtweets had already gone bust!? It was still going !!!?

Such a shame. I still buy the occasional CD from here to play in the car.

They pay £15M in business rates apparently according to the beeb... spotify/itunes/amazon have their flaws too - does enough go to the artist, will they bother as much, and the whole argument of tax.. but people will ofc lap it up...

Their prices aren’t competitive enough. Will be sad to see it go.

HMV staff are about as rude as you could possibly be where I live so if you close my local store and these people lose their jobs I will have a party to celebrate that. Disgusting people.

As a senior citizen I found the staff in our local HMV unfriendly and the whole atmosphere uninviting. They did not seem to want the grey haired £ and I have never been back since.

Shame, spent my teens buying CD’s in HMV, back when music was worth paying for though

Shame

Branson sold the last of his UK music retail operation in '07. By the end of '09, the whole thing was out of business. Amazed HMV has held on considering the competition.

I'm sure it's not that simple, but I wonder if some kind of merger between hmvtweets and GAMEdigital might be worth looking at for both companies. It would make good business sense, and could save thousands of jobs. saveourhighstreets

theskibeagle That's it for the last man standing! 😡

So sad it’s the only shop worth going to

Gutted but inevitable. I’d spend hours in here.

Support British companies like HMV,

Surprised they have lasted this long.

Downloads, shitloads, freeloads or get-a-life interesting radios. Get it, twats?

About the only shop I use, still like to have an actual album cd or vinyl in my hand not into this download stuff

beat Hmv no

Shame. Not everyone downloads.

KPMG look a lot like The Darkness.

wow

Very sad.

After spending another Christmas time shopping for cds and dvds in Lincoln HMV where the staff are always cheerful and helpful, this news really saddens me.

and

A sad day!

EtonOldBoys Aw end of an era - love the nerds that work in these shops escpecislly when they seem to approve of my purchases

It was only a matter of time. A British institution lost because of modern technology and an imagination-less generation. Sad times.

Progress. One less space needed in the town centre too for those obsessed with that agenda 🥴

I think it’s time that high street stores realised there’s just some business models that no longer work with the internet. Heavy and white goods will still be mostly successful but why am I going to pay extra for a game or dvd I can get cheaper from amazon 🤷‍♂️

Not really a surprise, they failed to adapt to the digital age

Shit just as The Moody Blues re-release their core 7 Albums in stereo and colour sleeves

Internet is not helping them

Does anybody even buy cds now?

Is it time that the Government and local councils start to intervene and support the local High Street? It's clearly in need of help and intervention. BBC_HaveYourSay

Close it this time, no bailout. It's all downloads now.

As evil as companies like amazon are, buying music/films for £20 on there vs £45 on hmv is the problem

Blame Spotify and other online ‘retailers’

THEY DONT SELL “MUSIC”!!! They sell CDs and DVDs.
