CEO Insight: Andrea Barnwell Brownlee on how to meet new demand

2022 was an exciting year for the Jacksonville area, with First Coast companies expanding, new businesses moving here and national and local issues bringing a host of challenges and opportunities. As the year winds down, the Business Journal is speaking with CEOs across the First Coast about the issues they dealt with in 2022 and their outlook on what 2023 will bring.

Here’s Andrea Barnwell Brownlee’s take on the impact museums and the arts have made across the city this year, and her thoughts on what’s to come. This year has been illuminating and has made all of the leaders in the museum sector, and the nonprofit world in general, really take stock and to think and be innovative and to forge different types of partnerships.

Although people know our gardens, they perhaps are not going to be prepared for what we’re bringing, in a really great way. We want to make sure that we keep surprising people, so we’re bringing in an exhibition called Flamboyance. It’s an exhibition featuring 50 flamingos that are sculptural in nature, and they’re made out of planted begonias. This flock of incredible flamingos that are going to be taking over our gardens this spring is going to be a really fun departure for us.

I also contend that museums are places where people can come together to talk about challenging things, topics that aren’t necessarily east to sort through by yourself or small groups of people.I think that across the board, across sectors, across industries, we all have our ear to the ground in terms of what is happening with the economy, what is happening with the possibilities of a recession.
