Privately-held Texas company NCH branches out into probiotics to boost cannabis yields with less water and fertilizer, with trials now underway.

Family-owned Texas company NCH Corp. has been long known as a privately-held maker of water treatment, biologicals, disinfectant and lubrication products.

But now the 8,500-employee company is widening its offerings into the legal cannabis space with a probiotic product made from a proprietary mix of natural bacteria found in soil and shown to boost plant performance. Allen Levy, an executive at NCH who manages NCH Life Sciences with other Levy family members, said ActPro could be used for several different plants and crops including roses, ferns, cabbage and peppers, in addition to cannabis.

“The large opportunities in cannabis and its growth under ideal soil conditions made it a lucrative target for our technology,” Levy said in an interview with MarketWatch via email.
