Shopping carts keep wandering away from their stores, draining taxpayers’ coffers, causing blight and frustrating local officials and retailers

Santa Fe, New Mexico, paid a local contractor $47,000 to round up about 3,000 shopping carts around the city in 2021 and 2022. Fayetteville, North Carolina, spent $78,468 collecting carts from May 2020 to October 2022. . Abandoned shopping carts are a scourge to neighborhoods, as wayward carts block intersections, sidewalks and bus stops. They occupy handicap spots in parking lots and wind up in creeks, ditches and parks. And they clog municipal drainage and waste systems and cause accidents.

Dodson and others in the shopping cart industry say the rise in lost carts can be attributed to several factors, including unhoused people using them to hold their belongings or as shelter. Homelessness has been rising in many major cities due to skyrocketing housing prices, lack of affordable housing, and other factors. There have also been incidents of people stealing carts for scrap metal.

Why are they paying contractors to round up carts. Tell the stores to get them

Maybe just put your cart in the cart return like a decent human being

But a homeless person can steal them and it’s hands off.

Yep....those damn shopping carts are the problem

At the store I work in they retrieve about 60 to 70 a week.

As much as I hated this when I lived in Australia, solution is to lock carts unless you have a coin. This worked well bc they had $ coins. If u didn’t return cart/trolley, u lose your $ but u couldn’t get the cart without the $. Ppl didn’t leave carts in parking lot to be stolen

Start arresting anyone pushing a shopping cart for theft and use their fines to pay the cart collectors.

“So this is why your store should attach an Ankle Monitor to each shopping cart so they will start to beep loudly if a thief tries to roll them away from parking lot. They will also beep if left outside away from return stall for over 5 minutes to get customers to roll them in”

This isn’t news

🚫🍔

Hahahaha

But a year of riots and theft didn't. K.

Not uncommon to find a couple of them dumped at the bus stop.

There is an offer, there is a girl in america.Give her the problem, she is frustrated as well.Does two negatives make one positive?

Australia got it sussed

Maybe someone should tell them about Aldi’s system?

grocery carts arent the problem , duh

Oh yeah, this is important…

PUT SOMETHING ON EACH ONE THAT WILL STOP IT FROM LEAVING THE GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT.

People are dying, Kim 🙄

Why would shopping carts just wonder off like that? Don’t they know they have a job to do

So Walmart gets fined for people leaving carts in random places, The store that provides millions in tax dollars and job, WM like star bucks has closed the doors and walked before, Be careful
