Experts are warning that electronic tracking and monitoring of remote employees in Ontario could be used by companies as evidence of time theft.

Time theft, a broad term used to describe incidents in which an employee says they are working when they are not, is not an idea exclusive to remote work.

Nita Chhinzer, an associate professor at the University of Guelph’s department of management, told CTV News Toronto this case sets a “crazy precedent,” in which an employee’s performance is based solely on their ability to fit eight hours of work into a day. “It's not going to be something that an employer can rely on carte blanche,” Gokhale said. “I think it can be part of an investigation, part of an inquiry into whether or not there was time theft or not.”October 2022 survey

At the same time, McKechnie argues an employer will have to prove the time spent away from work is significantly different than what an employee would experience while in the office. Simply scrolling through social media for five minutes, for example, wouldn’t be grounds for time theft, he said.

I'm alright with that. They'll see they're getting more hours from me when working from home. Working from the office has many distractions, waste time and less efficient.

What about the employer who Time Theft their employees?

'Experts are warning that if you steal from your company they now have a way to catch you'...

If you want evidence of time theft just take a look at all of your employees texting while at work. Not to mention all those extra cigarette breaks.

I work from home 3 days a week and during those 3 days I have the flexibility to run errands at lunch, or attend appointments. However, I always work earlier or later in order to ensure not only all my work is done, but also that I have put in the hours that I'm required to

Ridiculous. It’s the quality of work and what’s getting accomplished, not how many hours someone sits at a laptop. This is such an old school and behind the times way of thinking, by micromanaging, insecure leadership.

Would the mouse jiggler play the trick 🤣?

Big Corporations wanting full control of their employees. Just keep this in mind, someone is always watching. That's the freedom you give up to technology. They create thing claiming it's to better your life, but in reality,it's to track you. Right MSM.

Maybe through the discovery of this data the employee will also have a claim for overtime. That would be a balanced approach. Not likely but we can dream.

As it should

I guess the gig is up. You've been found out.

This great however my phone is always left at home so I'd love to see them shoving a micro chip up my ass 🤣🤣🤣

I say we revamp how we get paid. Average out the work with the time taken to complete it and figure out the proper pay per task. That way you have no excuse if you do not complete all the tasks at home in the given time frame and your pay suffers.

GL lol we turn the tracking off dummies
