Experts say Canada's plan to increase immigration may ease some pressures in the labour market, but bigger changes are needed to ensure new permanent residents are matched with the jobs that most need filling.

, the plan is intended to help attract labour in key sectors, including healthcare, skilled trades, manufacturing and technology.

Recent immigrants are less likely to see their skills and education utilized than Canadian-born workers, Statistics Canada said, and new and recent immigrants are overrepresented in certain industries, including transportation and warehousing, and accommodation and food services. International students and temporary foreign workers have made up an increasingly large portion of Canada's economic immigrants, or those selected for their contribution to the economy, who made up more than half of recent immigrants in 2021, Statistics Canada said.

Canada's dependence on temporary workers to fill long-term gaps is a huge problem, said Alboim. It creates little incentive to improve wages, conditions or supports for temporary workers, she said. However, not all the onus lies on the federal government, Jain said. One ongoing problem has been immigrants' credentials not being recognized in Canada, and while there have been some recent changes aimed at improving that, more needs to be done, he said. These credentials are the jurisdiction of provinces and territories, not Ottawa.

I want to be a Canadian citizen

How subtle. You’re carrying water by suggesting immigration is absolutely terrific and essential. It isn’t. The first world isn’t interested in paying 2M for a shack so we’re getting the 3rd 🌎 to put up in hotels & gazillionaires to rule over us.

nothing ALONE can fix it.

How about we make it easier for our own people to get training instead of making it an economic impossibity.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get certified and practice your home country profession in Canada. Many many years and possibly never. Relax the rules and be more flexible only then the labour market will cover the shortage.

Most of the immigrants get money and don’t need to work.

We should not allow any immigration at all until everyone can afford housing.

Not unless they can all build a home to live in

Immigration is causing massive issues!! Let’s fix Canada first before we open the doors wide to immigration again. fixcanada

more people coming into canada the less there will be for canadians

Can we trade them for convoy clowns who are a drain on society?

No, but it will increase the crime rate by 50%.

Because we are not bringing in the best. We are too high taxed now. We are not attractive as much anymore

DUH!!! Immigration makes everything worse. Especially all these low class Indian and Pakistani immigrants we have now! Ruining Canada!!!

What’s also happening is immigrants are joining the construction industry that can’t even read a measuring tape not alone rig a load for a crane and it’s endangering workers .

it generate rent and home crisis !

One of the problems is that they get a job bring in more of their race and slowly squeeze out the whites This is so prevalent in the seniors lodges extendicare etc
