The agreement says that almost 4,000 track-maintenance Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way workers, and more than 1,000 Brotherhood of Railway Carmen mechanical workers will now be granted four days of paid sick leave. Those workers also have the option now to change three personal leave days to sick days, be paid out for unused sick days or contribute the leave to their 401.
Another worker said that his union hasn't had talks with the railroad yet, but he was concerned about what might have to be sacrificed for the sick leave. "Joe gave me his word that he would bring about changes to the industry that are necessary to begin repairing the dysfunctional relationship between the railroads and the workers," BMWED President Tony D. Cardwell said in a statement."I applaud Joe for delivering on his word and entering into this historic agreement with BMWED."
