Economist Dr Emma Howard explains the economics of climate change - and how we need to move towards more sustainable food production

ECONOMICS IS A discipline concerned with the allocation of scarce resources. In theory, markets are a good way to organise economic activity and can provide an efficient allocation mechanism.

The impact on bystanders can be positive or negative, but given they are not participating in the market, they don’t pay for any positive impacts and are not compensated for negative ones. A positive production externality, for example, occurs when firms engage in research and development. The resulting knowledge spillovers can benefit other firms in the industry and beyond.

In recognition of the economic case for taxing goods with negative externalities, the Irish climate action plan includes incremental increases to carbon taxes on fuels, up to €100 per tonne of carbon dioxide by 2030. It is completely counterintuitive to heavily subsidise a carbon-intensive product such as beef. Given the negative externalities associated with meat production, and particularly beef consumption, many economists would argue that rather than subsidising production, a meat tax is more appropriate.

Changing consumer trends A Boston Consulting Group report published last year highlighted that investing in plant based alternative proteins gives the highest emissions savings per dollar invested across all sectors. The report also forecasts that with current trends, these alternative proteins could account for 22% of global protein consumption by 2035.

It's also about respect for the Farming Community and not the condescending, derogatory attitude of those pontificating who don't have a clue about the culture of that indigenous population.

Complete nonsense, climate change regardless of the carbon emissions. Carbon propaganda is just another way to control people and the gravy train.

Not gonna read but I see a cow pic + key word 'sustainable' so lemme guess... stop farming cows, eat soy and artificial meat created by corporations instead? Be a vegan with low t but a high sense of moral superiority? Am I in the right area..?

Food comes from hardworking farmers. Keep the farmers secure.

The Way to Go.

howardemma Ah yes the tax on meat. Make it expensive for poor people to eat it, not rich. close ours off then that meat gets shipped halfway across the planet? Food is a national security issue, we already lost our sugar industry which is now imported back to us from Germany.

Instead of talking out through your arses here, start growing your own

Where would we be without economists......AllForecastsAreWrong

Wait for the carbon credit system to be implemented and you won't be able to afford beef anymore. This is just laying the foundation of the brainwashing to come.

Leave the farmers alone

The irony of the narrative that cows will fart humans out of existence is lost on pushers of this bullshit story.

More spin to suit the greens fascist climate agenda.

The opinion of someone who doesn’t have qualifications in this area..The opinion of the cow would be just as valuable!

Not eat bugs or Bill Gates fake meat NO FARMERS = NO FOOD

What a load of bullshit!

Nope, I am still with BjornLomborg on this one, no suicidal myopic panic measures needed here. Just common sense!

There'd be more food if we didn't import so many Third World fraudsters. IrelandisFull

What did Emma have for dinner yesterday?

the economics of climate change are very simple the government will make up a few new taxes and empty your pockets based solely on a lie

Dr Emma Howard isn’t an atmospheric physicist or a climatologist, no qualifications in farming nor an agrologist. unqualifiedrant junkjournalism ClimateScam
