Amid hundreds of layoffs at one of Canada's largest cannabis producers, industry leaders are calling for federal action to help save the sector they say is being killed off with high tax rates and other policies.

Canadian cannabis business owners are calling for help from the federal government, saying high tax rates and strict rules have left their businesses struggling to survive.

"You're hearing from producers here today because we as growers and manufacturers sit at the heart of the cannabis supply chain," said President and CEO of British Columbia company Pure Sunfarms, Mandesh Dosanjh. "We need to be healthy in order for the whole system to thrive but that's not reality. Producers stand here in peril. Canadian cannabis is in peril.".

Jonathan Wilson, CEO of New Brunswick company Crystal Cure, called for the federal government to reconsider the tax rate as he says it's not only pushing away current businesses but eliminating the path for new producers to enter and grow the sector. "We're paying a regulatory fee, which was premised on a profitable industry, which tobacco and alcohol don't pay," Smitherman said Wednesday.

Useless idea to start with.

If it were Canadian Wineries, would Canada be expected to ?

Ha ha ha, a drug producing industry asking for government help. Yup this is the New Canada. Harvey Marshall

I don't get it... I pay substantially less amounts if money now then when it was illegal... Maybe this is a problem for the provinces that tax their citizens into poverty (BC, ont(

Umm we can grow our own so why would we buy from the overpriced government

Dumb idea to start with.

Only the government could fuck up selling drugs.

There's a pot store on every corner in Calgary. There's your problem right there. Of course most of them are going out of business. Welcome to the free market, kids.

And I should feel bad for them why? Where they not the ones to joyfully dance as they helped bring in tighter controls on E-cig use? Karma: it comes to get you in the end.

Feds are what ruined the industry. If by help they mean loosening up on the endless bureaucracy in the legal system than yes but anything else will just worsen the problems. Anything government touches turns to shit

Crack and heroin have proven to be more effective on public transit users .

Maybe if it didn't resemble brussel sprouts...🤦‍♀️

I think we have more cannabis stores than Tim Horton's. I'm having trouble believing any of this.

Another example of government ruining everything it touches.

The cannabis industry was doing fine before the government got involved

Make it cheaper to purchase. Taxes are way too high.

Take subsidies AWAY from media and give them to cannabis producers…..mor bang for the buck! Not to mention better credibility and happier folk!

Government weed is shit..just as anything government touches goes down the drain….

Help? Come on.

Absolutely not. If they can't survive as a business, let 'em go down.

banning time

Seriously!

Good. I don't like the shops in my area. Crime on ttc seems to have gone up. I also hope hard drugs being legal fails. Most drug cartels are satanic.
