While most restaurant chains expanding into greater Phoenix are focusing on opening stores in high population growth areas with higher household incomes, California-based Farmer Boys opened its second location in an industrial area in southwest Phoenix and that could be its model going forward.
Herry’s store is located at the corner of 83rd Avenue and Buckeye Road next to a CVS distribution center and across the street from a refrigerated trucking company. When she was 16, Herry started working at a Farmer Boys as a cashier and has been with the more than 40-year-old chain ever since. After being a manager in the Los Angeles market for several years, Herry took an opportunity to become a franchisee and grow the Farmer Boys brand in Arizona. She said it isn’t uncommon for employees to grow within the brand and then become owner/operators of their own stores.
Herry said the company’s focus on fresh produce and meat and making each order as it comes in sets Farmer Boys apart from many of the fast food companies that operate in industrial areas. But at the same time, she said Farmer Boys works fast and people can make it through the drive-thru relatively quick.
