Durant is the Phoenix Suns franchise's greatest acquisition since Charles Barkley in 1992.

Phoenix is in fifth place in the Western Conference standings, but Kevin Durant's arrival drew mostly raves from the sport's opinion-givers. He has been recovering from a sprained knee, but said he hopes to make his debut with the Suns during Friday's home game against Oklahoma City.

So why is acquiring Durant such a big deal? Here are some key reasons, along with comments Durant offered at his introductory news conference at the Footprint Center last Thursday.Durant was named one of the 75 greatest NBA players of all time last year as part of the league's 75th Anniversary season.

Here's what Durant had to say about his game and playing alongside Booker: “I think I built my game around being efficient, taking good shots, making good plays on both ends of the floor. I think my defense feeds my offense. I like to take shots in the midrange, I like to cut to the basket, I like to do the little things throughout the offense, and I think that’s what makes you a versatile player and be able to adapt to any offense.

With OKC, Durant led the Thunder to the playoffs six out of seven seasons from 2009-10 to 2015-16. That included one NBA final and four Western Conference Finals. He helped Golden State win two NBA championships and make it to a third in 2019, when he was slowed by injuries. During his first full season with Brooklyn in 2020-21, he led the Nets to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost to Milwaukee in seven games . Last season, Brooklyn lost in the first round to the Celtics.

“I think we got all the pieces to be successful. We got guys that experienced what it’s like to play in that final round, we got a champion already that’s overseeing us , Monty’s a champion as a coach , so we got guys that have been there and that’s half the battle, just knowing what it takes. And we got guys who can do pretty much everything on the floor, so we gotta put it together. So I’m looking forward to doing the work.
