Texas Gov. Rick Perry, left, chats with Red McCombs before Texans for Lawsuit Reform honored McCombs during a luncheon at The Bright Shawl. Tuesday, September 16, 2014SAN ANTONIO — Joseph Kopser thought it was only fair to warn Red McCombs.
McCombs, a larger-than-life San Antonio billionaire and philanthropist, had invited Kopser to visit with him after hearing Kopser address a breakfast group of prominent Bexar County business leaders.Kopser revisited the encounter during an interview Tuesday, two days after McCombs passed away at the age of 95.
“In those visits, he really went deep into prison reform and opportunities for the incarcerated that showed a side of humanity that I don’t know if enough people know about him,” Kopser said. “He talked about training for the incarcerated while they’re in prison and better transitioning into society again.”
As Texas experienced a political realignment and conservatives gravitated to the Republican Party, he did the same.In 1983, McCombs was working with developer Marty Wender on a plan to bring SeaWorld to the West Side of San Antonio. It looked like a lost cause, in part because the proposed location was out in the middle of a desolate cow pasture, with no major corridors passing through it.
gilgamesh470 Along the lines of this excellent column on Red McCombs as a 'pragmatic thinker who looked for concrete solutions,' I once had a chat with him about his belief that marijuana should be legalized in the U.S. and how the country would benefit from the tax money it would generate.
