Consumers of sugar-sweetened beverages will not have to dig any deeper in their pockets than they already are, as the health promotion levy – sugar tax – will remain unchanged for the next two fiscal years

The SA Sugar Association is pleased with the government's decision not to increase the sugar tax for now.

The tax was intended to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, but it also required beverage producers to reformulate the product recipes and replace cane sugar with alternative or artificial sweeteners.Sasa executive director Trix Trikam said: Ahead of Godongwana's speech, sugar industry players were on high alert as they anticipated a possible sugar tax hike.
