Opinion: Green Line LRT – A key investment in Calgary’s future yyc yyccc

The Green Line LRT will deliver jobs and economic, transportation, social and environmental benefitsit will expand mobility choice while providing rapid and direct connections between communities, employment hubs and key destinations. Delivering those benefits is our responsibility and since the project received final approval in 2021, our priority has been making Green Line a reality.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

And while any project of this size and scope will have critics and supporters, we can probably all agree that everyone wants what is best for the city. Green Line is an investment in Calgary, for Calgarians, and we are ensuring that we get this right.Article content As we continue this important work and prepare for the development phase, we do so within the $5.5B set by our funding partners in 2020.

In all ridership scenarios, the business case for investment in the Green Line remains strong. In fact, as of January 2023, Calgary is at 80 per cent pre-pandemic ridership levels and expected to continue to grow. North of us, Edmonton recently announced it is back up to 100 per cent of pre-pandemic ridership. Clearly people need transit now and into the future.Article content

I had high hopes until I found out who they contracted to build it.

Oh,nicer trains for the homeless to sleep in and addicts to get high in,how fabulous! SMH!!

Absolutely foolish expenditure. Please stop this nonsense

Perhaps you should first install turnstiles to ensure the mass of drug addicts can’t use the C-train as their preferred method of transport to the burbs to commit crimes?

Would love to see the numbers that say we’re at 80% pre pandemic levels. I take the train every day. 5 yrs ago would be standing room only with odd time having to wait for next one. Now last stop out of core plenty of seats, they could get away with 1-2 cars.

The final cost will be at least double the original estimate. It will be a green elephant, popular with people who wouldn't be caught dead on it...like politicians.

There is zero reason to believe anything yyccc cityofcalgary calgarytransit or advocates tell us about greenline is true. From costs, benefits, ridership, environmental, timeline & on & on everything out of their collective mouths must be taken with a massive grain of salt
