Tensions are fast reaching boiling point in Richards Bay, where logjams caused by thousands of trucks heading to the port last week culminated in armed groups taking matters into their own hands. The KwaZulu-Natal towns of Richards Bay and Empangeni continue to take severe strain as thousands of coal tippers stream into the port. Exporters are rushing to take advantage of strong demand and buoyant coal prices amid an ongoing energy crisis in Europe.
