The trees are slated for mass removal next Monday due to work on Seattle’s project connecting downtown to the waterfront.

A new pedestrian and bike path entrance is set to replace the cherry trees, which are over 40 years old with hybrid elms.

is opposing the removal of the trees, likening it to “the canary in the coal mine for the loss of both cultural preservation and pedestrian safety at the Market entrance on 1st and Pike,” president Ruth Danner said. “The key reason for cherry tree removal is to make way for the creation of a plaza redesign of Pike Street . This redesign is potentially unsafe for pedestrians, tourists, cyclists, and first responders at the Market’s primary historic entrance.

Finally. Was getting tired of their majesticness.

Wtf… why? just make that block of Pike St pedestrian only. That one lane of eastbound traffic wasn’t doing anyone any good anyway. While you’re at it, make the rest of the road in front of the Market pedestrian only as well, except for Market-related commercial vehicles.
