The Preston butchers who have gone from being at the bottom to the very top

Tucked away behind a busy market meat stall is a man who, 'with nothing', created a family run butcher that has stood the test of time for 40 years.

The 68-year-old from Clayton-le-Woods, began his career in Chorley. The market town, like Preston was a bustling hub of local independent businesses and in the late 1900's, was a prime time for traders like butchers. "There was half a dozen people working there and I was right at the bottom, right at the bottom and it was horrible, I didn't enjoy it to start with. It was scrubbing and in them days you weren't scrubbing like you get it now, it was different, everything marked and so you had really work at everything.

"That did a lot for me and lot for my confidence because at that time I was living on my own for sometime. It was me and my brother, in a council house after my mum had left the house and my dad too, when I went home one night, my dad had moved so he left me with a council house around my neck and I was only 18 years of age at that time.

"All of a sudden, Chorley changed. Supermarkets became more and more prevalent, double yellow lines were going up all over the show and traffic was moved all around," Adrian said.
