The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday, in Doha, critisised the existing debt architecture that makes it more expensive for the Least-Developed Countries to borrow on the global market than their advanced counterparts.

He warned that such an “unfair” arrangement would make it extremely difficult for the LDCs to meet the 2030 Agenda for 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, revealed this in a statement he signed on Monday titled ‘President Buhari calls for duty-free market access for least developed countries, criticises ‘unsustainable external debt burden’.The designation entitles them to preferential market access, special technical assistance, aid, and capacity-building on technology, among other benefits.

Also on the list are Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi and Mali.
