Eskom has announced that there will not be any Stage 5 load shedding for the week, as previously communicated; however, Stage 4 will continue until further notice. 06 March 19:25Stage 4 and 5 load shedding will continue to be implemented throughout the week, Eskom said on Monday evening.
Breakdowns currently amount to 17 622MW of generating capacity while 4 659MW of generating capacity is out of service for planned maintenance. Following the failure of five generating units today, Stage 5 loadshedding will be implemented from 16:00 today until 05:00 tomorrow whereafter Stage 4 loadshedding will resume until further notice.Following the failure of five generating units on Monday, Stage 5 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 until 05:00 on Tuesday, Eskom said.
Thereafter, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 05:00 until 16:00 followed by Stage 3 load shedding until 05:00 on Monday morning.03 March 11:34Rudi Dicks, head of project management in the office of the Presidency: A one stop shop for energy is being formed at the DTIC . That is being replicated for energy applications. The details around this are being finalised.Cassim says that the preference is to not increase load shedding. We should not accept stage 6 load shedding.
Creecy said that on a case-by-case basis, legal advice will be taken on whether it is viable to shorten timeframes for applications for environmental authorisation.Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy says the regulations allow for streamlining of environmental regulations – for the duration of the state of disaster.
Eskom has long estimated that it kills a couple of hundred people a year through bad air. Independent research suggests the number is in the thousands – and that the company is on track to kill closer to 80 000 people within years, not counting the impact of climate change. On Monday, Dlamini-Zuma gazetted new disaster regulations aimed at boosting electricity generation, and improving Eskom's plant performance - but also exempt load shedding on essential infrastructure. This includes hospitals, water treatment plants, rail and ports, food production and storage facilities, as well as critical electronic communication and broadcasting infrastructure.
Stage 5 load shedding will then be implemented from 16:00 until 05:00 on Thursday, with Stage 4 load shedding from 05:00 until 16:00. This comes after a generating unit each at Camden, Kriel, Matla and Matimba were returned to service in the last 24 hours - but breakdowns at a unit each at Duvha, Lethabo, Majuba and Tutuka caused units to be taken offline. There have been delays in returning units to service at Arnot, Camden, Duvha and Kendal.
