LISTEN: Why Australia wants nuclear submarines ABCNewsDaily

He said that what happened was detrimental to your reputation. What do you say to that?So the French president, as you said, he was furious because Australia had pulled out of a huge submarine deal with France and there was all these secret negotiations going on behind the scenes between the UK, Australia and the US. So let's leave that behind now. But it was quite a moment in history.

In as little as four years' time, US nuclear-powered attack submarines will be deployed to Australia, the government says to keep us safe. They're the length of a rugby pitch and can cruise through the water in almost complete silence, and the price tag is mind-blowing too: up to $368 billion over the next 30 years.

Today, the ABC's political editor, Andrew Probyn, on how fear of China has driven us to the biggest defence investment in our history.

$368b what a waste of money. Better off getting 20 or more collins class subs that are agile & better suited to Aust waters. Apparently they can stay underwater for 70 days and are cruise missile capable. But we get 3 subs wow!

The Politicians and the Military Corporates and Uranium Industry want it. We Australia want better Public Education, Govt housing, environmental action

Australian does not want this. Only LNP and it's supporting Murdoch-ABC want to force this to Australians. Unfortunately, Albo is too weak and not too intelligent Nd fell into this trap. Like a milking cow to save bankrupt UK and create jobs for American weapon industry. 360B?🫡

Australia does not want nuclear submarines.

According to responses to this question. No one wants under water Chernobyls running around our coast... Why are we paying for American ideology and metal under water magic beans that will do nothing but send us broke and to war Paul Keating is right... auspol abc730

AlboMP NO Australians do NOT want these subs. Can someone start a petition please?

Not with my fxxking tax money. This deal was orchestrated by Morrison and puppets followed!!!

No Australians do not want nuclear submarines We dont want to become the vassal sub imperial power of US hegemony We want a mature relationship with our biggest trading partner and maintain our own sovereignty and we want to invest in our future not our destruction

again the only reason you buy nuclear weapons is preparing for nuclear wars. so who aggregates the conflicts and who benefits

WHy? Cause US told them to? lol.

When was the last time China invaded a country or dropped a bomb ? America is the country most others fear . The sheer absurdity and stupidity of the defence spend leaves many mums and dads struggling to make ends meet shaking our collective head . ALP , never again .

$368B over the next 30 years... whenever as a defence let alone a government project stayed within initial costings.. more likey $500B+ over the 30 years

My patriotism died when i was forced to choose between vax & my family's well-being. I preserve my immutable rage, such that I'll never forget.

We don't want nuclear subs! The US (world terrorists) has picked a fight, this time in our neck of the woods. They should give us the subs FOR FREE!!! Let the United States of Terrorists finish the fights they start. Or better yet, we should step back from the whole thing.

So parasites can steal a bunch of $$$ off the Australian people ?

this was an order from US government whether you want it or not

Because a submarine that has to keep surfacing to recharge batteries is next to useless. Why Australia ever thought that such a craft was worth buying is beyond me.

So Australian taxpayers can contribute to the military industrial complex

Uhh don't you mean Why does the Australian Government want nuclear submarines, because I'm sure if it was put to a vote every day Australians would have rejected the idea on a massive scale, we didn't vote for this, we voted OUT the party that wanted this.auspol

We want nuclear subs but don't want nuclear power.. the most cleanest and efficient power on earth.. why do you think they use it on subs..

It's an American imperial tax. Ukraine pays in blood. We pay in the hundreds of billions.

And here we are again Now tho It's Labour's turn to not listen to the people Libs and Labs must go !

Because big expensive war toys make politicians ... excited

Former Australian ambassador to Beijing. Geoff Raby said this: “US is determined to provoke conflict over Taiwan. Ironically, that could make conflict less likely as the Chinese leadership will not allow themselves to be drawn into a suicidal action.”

Surely China need only to decide to take back Taiwan in the next 3-6-7 years before any subs arrive for RAN .

Could buy 7 twitters for the money

So we need to spend 1/3 of a trillion to keep ourselves safe from *checks notes* our biggest trading partner. Right.

Nuclear subs have massive deterrent & real capability. Some Australians needs to wake up to China and its ambitions.

Geeo politics bullshit. China sanctions us and the US with glee jumped in and filled the gap.Great friends. Now we are helping US to contain China. How many bases does the US need to create potential targets to protect itself.

Safe from what. Subs wont keep us safe from Governments that lie and break the Law quite deliberately.

No we don't

getting the old second hand ones might be the end of this madness

Government wants it, the people want houses jobs, cheaper food and a country that's not tearing itself apart bcoz of racist policy's being introduced into our constitution

The actual fact actually came out of Skynews,by mistake 🥺🙄 Not ABC.. shame on you.

This is so good. Politicians and investors will get so rich from this deal on their military stocks all paid for by the losers that pay tax. They are such brainwashed suckers that believe any old crap you tell them. What’s a bunch of losers. 😂😂💰💰💰

Australians don't want it, so the premise is wrong

Adequate healthcare. Stable economy. Affordable housing. Submarines. Please rank these and tell me what Australians want.

Why don't we wait for America to collapse and buy the subs for pennies on the dollar?

Because Albanese wants publicity and doesn't want to upset Liberals

Why nuclear-powered submarines are better for AustraliaANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre’s Professor John Blaxland discusses why a nuclear-powered submarine is better for Australia than a conventional diesel-powered submarine. 'The technology for surveillance has got a lot better, there is now a really high rate of overflight with satellites … over Australia … combine that with artificial intelligence, you have the ability to detect any kind of surface disruption in the ocean,” Mr Blaxland told Sky News host Peta Credlin. 'The diesel-electric submarine has long been considered stealthy enough because we could do long transits and snort for a little bit to recharge the batteries and very unlikely you’d get spotted, of course, now, that likelihood is significantly declined. “So we really had to rethink the business and that’s why nuclear propulsion is the answer.” Paper in '18 seems to have almost made even the nuclear powered models not so stealthy. Wonder what tech is out there now/before 2030? Why not net-zero subs ..?!?
