Business leaders often say they have taken a circuitous route to the top. It is truer of director Naomi Edwards than most.

Edwards embarked on her first drastic career change in her early 20s. She was working at National Mutual in New Zealand and studying to be an actuary, but quit to go rockclimbing around the world for three years.Woodrow, then the second-largest pension consultancy in the UK, with the rate at which she had passed her actuarial exams to date and a few “very grubby” paper references, and quickly landed a role in the group’s Bristol office.

Edwards decided to construct shows that involved a well-known public figure, who would hopefully act as a drawcard. She constructed shows where a right-wing talk show host would interview a left-leaning politician or activist.were two early participants. Both shows sold out – Brown at The Gasworks Theatre in Melbourne and Professor Singer at the University Theatre in Melbourne – and turned a profit.

“Imagine the poor members hearing that the chair is a comedian, who’s looking after their lifetime savings.” So, her character Dolly Putin was killed off and Edwards “got on with being a serious nerd”. “That’s not true. I think that the more broadly based your background is, and your experience and your exposure, the more you can contribute, and I think you’ll be a better person.”Edwards also has some advice to fellow business leaders: employ more maths nerds, but not for the obvious reason.
