The president of the NT Cattleman's Association says he doubts Murray Watt really believes shutting down the trade is the 'best policy'.

The NT Cattleman's Association has gone into bat for the live sheep trade, fearing its phase-out could leave the live cattle trade under threat.abc.net.au/news/nt-cattleman-association-supports-live-sheep-exports/102110656The Northern Territory Cattleman's Association has challenged federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt's support for his government's decision to phase-out the live sheep export trade.

Mr Connolly said while he believed Mr Watt's assurances that the live cattle trade was safe, northern cattle producers were still concerned. "I do think there are significant differences between the live cattle industry and the live sheep, and it's not just me — our whole government, from the prime minister down, believes that."

"It's not the only factor to consider — the animal welfare issues, the loss of social licence — are factors as well, but we can't ignore the fact that the live cattle industry is a key economic industry in northern Australia.

Yes let's send refrigerated meat to third world countries without fridges.

The NT Cattle Industry head is a paid-up member of the National Party. Most probably getting kick backs as well. Ban the insidious cruel practice. Set up export abattoirs up north to replace the trade.

The cattle industry head should get on the live export ship with the sheep and experience the cruelty first hand instead of sitting in an office counting the money. Ban it.

Far more efficient and humane to process sheep locally... At least you know/hope it's been done correctly, and jobs stay here.

Ending live sheep export trade is ALP policy. Shut it down
