Taxi drivers say the new policy, whereby drivers could be issued with penalty points, is 'very draconian'.

The proposals would also require foreign nationals, who have not continuously lived in the UK for more than five years, to obtain a "certificate of good conduct" by the relevant embassy for each country they have resided in for more than three months.

UK citizens who have lived outside the country for more than three months at a time must do the same. More than 100 drivers gathered outside The Guildhall in Northampton to protest against the plans last month.WNC said the consultation had been extended to 23 April while "further engagement work is undertaken to seek views on the proposals".

The council said the proposals would supersede current policies for the areas of Daventry, Northampton, and South Northants and define the driver, vehicle, and operator standards for Hackney Carriages and private hire licensing for current licence holders and all new licence applicants.

A lot don’t go the right way I glad I very rarely use a cab

Some don’t deserve to even be taxi drivers. The few I’ve come across are rude and don’t even know the way they were going and to stop at designated taxi stops. Not to have an excuse cos they’re taxi drivers they can stop wherever they want and wait
