But travel insurance generally doesn’t pay out if your itinerary is disrupted because the airline doesn’t have enough pilots. Staff shortages are generally not covered by trip cancellation insurance. And many travel delay benefits do cover common carrier, or airline, delays—but there are specified waiting periods before coverage kicks in.
Mexico, Italy, Israel, the Bahamas and France are the top spots travelers plan to visit in 2023, based on travel insurance sales data from Squaremouth. For those traveling within the U.S., costs are expected to keep rising. The average trip cost for travelers within the U.S. has increased every year since 2019. It rose from $2,896 in 2019 to $4,245 in 2022. That’s a 46% hike. Based on this trend, it’s likely that travelers will keep spending more on domestic trips in 2023, notes Moncrief.
Meanwhile, travel insurance sales over the past two years indicate a resurgence in travel for the “gray tsunami” generation, says Angela Borden, spokesperson for Seven Corners.
