People in Paris have voted to ban electric-scooter rental services from its streets in a hotly debated referendum

electric-scooter rental services

As a result, the three companies that pay for contracts to operate in Paris, including the U.S.-based company Lime, will have to yank their fleet of a combined 15,000 e-scooters in the city by Sept. 1, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Sunday. The scooter companies said in a joint statement that the low turnout reflected what they called restrictive rules that discouraged the services’ users, with only 21 polling locations listed across the city and no electronic voting. “This led to an extremely low turnout, heavily skewed toward older age groups, which has widened the gap between pros and cons,” they said.

In the run-up to the election, the three scooter companies argued that they have worked hard to improve their services since their chaotic debut half a decade ago, when scooters littered the streets and angry residents threw them in the Seine River. They note that they now have 400,000 riders making about 1.7 million trips a month.

They are amazing in Nashville, watching absolutely smashed people crash and wipeout!!!!

Hotly debated? By who…? Only 8% of the population voted ….

Long felt that the escooter craze is antisocial & dangerous. Birmingham & Paris have seen sense, removing them. Data showed it replaced public transport, cycling & walking more than car trips, so actually create more environmental issues whilst making cities less walkable

Such a shame, great way to get around for many. There's also cars that have crashes so I assume they will ban all of them next? Actually, sometimes humans have fights... ban them too.

Only 7% voted, it was a terrible organization done by a terrible local government. While scooters are annoying, what an example of an incompetent local government.

ianguider Poor management was the issue in Paris. The scooters were scattered everywhere and lying on footpaths. The user should have been fined for not leaving the scooter back at a designated dispatch point.

I have never seen and experienced a worst project than this one. It smelled corruption when it begun but turned out to be incompetence. High maintenance High theft rate High pedestrian accidents High negligence Hazardous Low popularity
