Mary Lou McDonald said many accidental landlords are opting to sell their properties but rejected suggestions they are doing so because they fear a Sinn Féin government would impose further restrictions on rent rises while giving greater rights to tenants

“That’s what’s driving the exit from the market and the important thing now is that the State is in a position to intervene and acquire those properties so that when they are being sold, families with young children, older people, single people, do not end up losing the roof over their head.

“I would simply tell Leo Varadkar that first-time buyers and those trying to rent are very fearful of the continuance of a Fine Gael-led government because we have all seen the consequences of that in terms of high property prices and rents that are extortionate right across the country. ] The Business Post reported that a draft PwC report has warned clients to speed up the sale of assets and investments in their pension pots in order to protect their wealth in advance of Sinn Féin coming to power, with the party riding high in opinion polls.

“Their biggest challenge now is to attract talent, keep talent and ensure that workers can actually put a roof over their heads. That is the single biggest challenge and I think we can all accept that the current Government has failed to rise to that challenge.”

Of course she knows that it is wrong, but it is pushing FFG into a corner, her problem is that the mess it is creating won't be fixable if she gets into power and then she will have to find excuses for her failure.

They have made a dogs dinner of it in opposition, unlikely to inspire the electorate to trust them with a majority.

They might be popular in opposition but no party will stay in government with them long enough for them to make a mess of this country and they will end up like the progressive democrats

Sinn Fein socialists be a disaster for Ireland

A lot social commentators think a SF government will see a business exodus from the south ……..

The simple truth is the Shinners have terrified landlords out of the market. Be afraid. It is the usual populist rant to play to the crowd. Pity they are doing nought to tackle dereliction and vacant properties and lots.

Rental, ownership and new forms of tenure

I could be a 'Would be' Irish landlord.. wild horses would get me renting out a place there now , what with the loony left and SF IRA ready now to effectively take control over any such property now.

Landlords are opting to sell because they don't want to pay 50% tax on rental income.Any tax dodger will be running out the door too with the RTB, LPT and PAYE rental credit directing Revenue to such cases

What are SF credentials What have they achieved What is Mary Lou's profession/training They seem to have all the answers

Yep it’s laughable suggestion that it’s SF policies - accidental landlords getting out at the peak of property market before house prices fall is a no brainier

That’s the exact reason landlord’s are selling up, Sinn Fein and PBP amongst other have decimated the rental market, if landlords are not incentivised to remain in the rental market, there will be none left at all, Shame on you Mary Lou

“We will just build them Ryan” 😂😂

SF have to pretend to support the welfare class for their votes as there are soooo many honey mommy's with housing issues, but how would they actually help? Would they support their voters or tax payers who can't afford a mortgage 🤨 I can't imagine they could run the country

Ms McDonald and her leaders in west Belfast will cause the destruction of the ROI if ever put in government.

Anyone I know who has a property of getting out now. Not sticking around to see what SF has in store for them when they get into Govt.

She would say that wouldn’t she!

Didn’t Davy or one of the big firms advise clients on doing this if they get in gov?

Aye surely, but but but Sf. Ffs 100yrs of being pandered to by ffg slum landlords running for cover now.

Even “on purpose” landlords are leaving the market for fear of SF going into Government. Every right minded entrepreneur knows that a SF led Government is bad for business. Their ideas & policies over the last 2 years highlight this! talking through her 🕳️again

Well she would say that wouldn't she?

Who cares, nationalise the market. Job done.

Sure

She is wrong!!! Us landlords have been talking about it for a long time now.

The more the media & the people in power go after SF.. The more I'm convinced to vote for them..

Mary Lou is wrong.

This literally is exactly what landlords are saying. SF are making fancy promises with no consideration for 2nd or 3rd order affects.

I believe she is misinformed on her opinion.

I’m selling my house that was in negative equity for many years. Barely broke even for a number of years, with tax, insurance, management fees, upkeep costs, mortgage! But that’s not why I’m selling! I would not be selling that house if it weren’t for the fear of a Sinn Fein govt

Of course that's one of the reasons! She has no clue...

Landlords going nowhere, evicting tenants to put their properties on Airbnb. THAT is the problem!

More Sinn Fein propaganda in the Irish Times. When does it stop?

From Brendan Burgess' articles in the Times today - on why spending taxpayer money to buy instead of building is counter productive. Mary Lou wants to go one step further and spend billions to house private renters (on unlimited incomes) that aren't even on social housing lists.

She is wrong.

I'm a landlord. Have really good tenants and they pay well below market rate. When/If current tenancies end, I won't be issuing new ones until after next General Election.

The real Irish crisis is going to start with Sinn Fèin….

Vast majority are doing it or are considering doing it, exactly because of potential SF policy.

Fill landlords properties with Sinn Fein voting benefit claimers on the never never on cheap rents- no thanks

This is designed to sound compassionate but like most SF policies it is unworkable, populist BS. SF would potentially spend tens of billions that would not build a single extra house? That would not house a single person in emergency accommodation or stuck living with parents?

Reminds me of the 1932 election campaign when FF was apparently a front for a quasi-Bolshevik communist conspiracy.

That is a huge part of the exodus of small landlords!

The shit show wil continue unabated with SF in control

Perhaps MaryLouMcDonald hasn’t been listening to EOBroin ‘s rhetoric for the past 5 years. We hear him loud and clear - Exit! Exit! Exit!

People are selling up because, right or wrongly, they fear their property will be seized. This is what their shinner hero Hugo chavez did in Venezuela on coming to power, and there's nothing to suggest they will not do likewise.

Wise up people go look North and the property ownership among the comrades, their ain't no Socialism, just money-making.

The thought of a semi communist SF government virtually seizing assets is the main reason. But they can't accept their impact or are so far removed from economic reality they don't understand.

Since O'Broin's put it out there that SF would Ban landlords selling properties they're out.

Rents are through the roof, demand was never as high. And the people with the supply are exiting the market. But of course it's nothing to do with the prospect of SF in Govt.

Definitely SF the new established, establishment - after acquiring that unique ability to look in different directions at once. Pro landlord / anti landlord. Pro business / anti business. Pro everything / anti everything. More FFG than FFG itself

Small landlords are leaving because of Government policy, Government are the only people who can make policy. Opposition deputies can make noise and promises.

She's wrong. I know of two who are contemplating selling before the next GE for that reason. I'm not justifying their decision or motives, and it is not the only factor: prices peaking, interest rates rising but Sinn Féin's rise is a factor and it is speeding a stampede to exit.

If there is to be a silver lining to a Shinner led government, taxing vulture funds and large scale landlords out of the market would be a net positive. No sense of community in many places when most residents are transient renters.

Let's not forget that a Fine Gael Fianna Fail Green government undermined the rule of law with the eviction ban

Bring on SF regardless
